Do I need both Photos and iPhotos in the Pictures folder?

I presume is was from old updates of the OS. I've gone from 10.7 to !0.9, to 10.10

I don't want to delete one and find half my photos disappear. One is 14Gb, the other is 10Gb, and the Pictures folder total is 19Gb (including aGb of my own stuff), so there something shared in some way.

Is it safe to ditch iPhoto (app), or will that cause problems

If you are sure all your images made the trip over to the new Photos app/library after the migration, you can delete iPhoto and the iPhoto library file from the pictures folder. That said, it is not really using double the space like it appears to be.

The old library uses what are called hard links to the same data bits that are in the new library so the data is not using 2X the space. Good article here that explains it.

Think I'll run a Time Machine backup and then try ditch iPhoto, assuming that Time Machine will restore hard linked files.
