iPhotos missing

Good morning chaps, I have two iMacs, looking on my main one there are a load of photos missing (all from this year as it happens) ... on my 'secondary' iMac they are all there and they are up in iCloud so at least they haven't gone for ever, anyone any idea as to (1) how they went missing (2) how to get them back please ? I think I did a rebuild and restarted etc but still no there ! many thanks Roger
