iPod iPod 1st Gen battery and pricing.

I recently got a 20GB 4th gen iPod b/c my 10GB iPod was overfilled! (I have about 17GB of songs now). The battery life of my 1st Gen 10GB iPod also dropped to about a few minutes. It works fine when plugged in but is worthless when it is unplugged. My dad was wanting to buy my old iPod from me. So I was wonderring 2 things, 1) how much and where would you reccomend getting a new battery from? 2) what would be a reasonable price to sell it for? remember im selling it to my dad so i don't want to rip him off, and at the same time he doesnt want me to give it to him for free b/c he wants to help 'support' my college drinking habits, er i mean laundry and food. Thanks for your input!!

As far as selling it once repaired, I can't imagine it would fetch too much more than the cost of replacing the battery. This is a wild guess, but if it were mine I'd start at maybe $75 (and push the new battery) and see if anyone bites.

Of course, function is in the eyes of the beholder - a new 1G 10Gig iPod is still bigger in HDD size then the iPod Mini, and plays music just as well as any other device released thereafter. So, I'd imagine someone just interested in having an iPod would be interested in your old one.

Kudos to you for trying to recycle/resell your iPod though, instead of just chucking it in the trash.

[Edit]: Whoops, I forgot you were selling it to your dad. I'd still say somewhere between $60 (for a "family discount") and $75.

I sold my 1G 5GB iPod recently for $100. Battery life was 10 hours. Another $20 for a case that I had laying around and it went for $120.

Not too shabby for a 3.5 year old piece of technology!

I just got a replacement battery for a 1st gen iPod from iPodResQ. It cost about $36 after s/h and was at my door less than 24 hrs after ordering. Two perks: 1) it came with the tools to remove the iPod case and some fairly simple instructions to follow, 2) the new battery has a longer life than the original one ever had.

Took me about 10 mins to get the battery put in. My wife, for whom we were considering buying a new iPod mini, says she feels like she has a brand new iPod now...

thanks for your input, ill check out the different battery kits. and i think $60 would be good for selling to my dad. though i bet i could get a little more if i was selling it to someone else, or e-baying it.

Be SURE this is a first gen and not a second gen. First and second look idenitcal but for 2 different ways. First, the scroll wheel doesnt move on the 2nd Gens, and the Firewire port has a cover.

Thank you for your concern, but I do pride myself on being a big enough NERD/geek/macaholic to know which generation ALL of my apple products are!!! LOL. But this is a good comment for anyone who might not know for sure, because I agree, the two look very similar (not like the 3rd gen with buttons in different places). But actually I do not think it matters, both of the websites recomended here say the battery is for first and second generation iPods.

Now all that is left is chosing which company to get the battery from, both of the ones reccomened here are similar in price and both come with tools to replace the battery. I guess it will depend on which website my dad thinks is cooler! heh. unless anyone else has anymore recs.
