iPod iPod 4th generation - change Harddrive to a bigger one

Hello,

I have a 4th generation iPod to repair. I don't want to buy a new one, because I have the tools needed and a 1.8'' HDD on ebay is quite cheap. The thing is, I only find 80GB and above, while the original HDD of the device is only 20GB. Can I go ahead and buy the 80GB one and will it work, or do I really need to buy an equal drive? iFixit makes me doubt it...

Make sure to check the thickness. Also check Google for iPod hard drive replacement and there are a million how-tos and sites that include info on compatible drives for different generation iPods.

See if you can find a Toshiba MK6006GAH. 60Gb and it fits perfectly. That's what I did to my old 4th gen. Worked perfectly until I dropped it from a height.

Height really, really matters when it comes to replacing hard drives in iPods. With your generation, the 20GB model had a single platter drive while the thicker 40GB had a 2-platter thicker drive. (IIRC)

If you're feeling really ambitious, you might even be able to find a solid state disk to throw in there! (Not entirely sure, blind guess)

Thank you for your answers, now I know what to look for.

A SSD would be a nice touch, but just maybe a little too much for fancy for an old chap like this iPod
