iPod ipod 5.5 gen 80 gig problems with hard drive - should i replace it myself?

my 80 gig iPod's hard drive is failing i think -- when i restore the iPod and copy songs back over i hear the hard drive sound like it's hitting a bad sector and it stops spinning, then it cranks back up. is there anything i can do without opening it up and getting a new hard drive in there? it hangs on only certain songs -- my guess is that they're in the same place on the hard drive (same sector) -- and it won't respond to anything except for a reset. also, the hard drive sounds like it's going back and forth over the same area -- sort of clicking, but not loudly, just moving back and forth over the same section on the drive.

i hope this makes sense. my thoughts are hard drive failure, and i'm wondering if i should open it up and replace the hard drive (it's out of warranty ) or take it in and let apple take care of it?

My suggestion would be to take it in to Apple to identify exactly what the problem is; if it is still under warranty (you didn't say) you would be covered for repairing/replacing any such flaw. While you are reasonably certain it is the hard-drive, it might be something else (battery life problems are a perennial "issue" with iPods). If you feel confident enough to take it apart, and replace the hard drive, by all means do so, but I'd take it in to be examined by Apple; that way, you know what the problem is. Same thing happened to me. My ipod won't load any songs onto it, and it happened a month after my 2 year warranty was up. ****in bull **** if you ask me. The guy at the Apple store said there are places that will replace your HDD in your ipod with a new one.
