iPod iPod 5G; no longer charges?

I've had my iPod 5G since 08 and have had no issues with it until now, whenever I plug it into iTunes it appears as a device, syncs normally and I can see the charge icon on the screen, however after less than a minute has passed the charge icon disappears but it is still recognised as a device in the iTunes library. I've left it like this for awhile and nothing happens, the battery does not charge at all! Does anyone know what I should do?

Compatibility

I'm sure all iPod models are compatible with the latest iTunes but could it be a compatibility issue?

Sometimes with the older iPods, if the battery was completely dead, they needed to be plugged into the mains with the mains adaptor. (Although, I don't know if this effected the 5G - had to replace the battery in mine not too long ago).

If that doesn't work, then it sounds like you may need to replace the battery. If you're brave enough, there are plenty of video tutorials and instructions on YouTube.

i've tried resetting and restoring to factory settings, i'm running the latest version of iTunes as well, i've managed to get it fully charged but it still occasionally does not recharge when plugged in... i might just take it in to the apple store and speak to them.

One more thing to try before taking it to the Apple Store is use a different USB cable and see if that makes a difference?
If not, then it might be worth taking to the Apple Store.

For an iPod 5G you're probably better off just buying a new used one off craigslist at this point. Apple will probably charge a comparable amount to fix the one you have, if they even support them anymore.

They are supported by Apple. $59 to send in for battery replacement. Be warned, you may receive a different ipod back, if you send yours in. At least this was a concern in the past.

An other GREAT option is to get a battery from iFixit (yes you can buy cheaper from ebay, but I like a reputable seller like iFixit), and use their repair guide to replace the battery yourself.
