Hi everyone,

My 4 month old 5G 30GB white iPod has something rattling inside (or something could be loose or not fastened down properly) and I have no idea what it is:confused: It works perfectly, no problems whatsoever, but the rattling annoys me:( Anyone know what could be wrong?

It might work now but I wouldn't leave this to chance - send it back to apple while it is still under warranty. (Or you could just have a look yourself but this would void your warranty!)

This would be my advice as well. :)

Not sure that there should be anything inside the iPod that would be loose to make a rattling noise. It could be that the HDD in the iPod is dying...

If it's just a tiny little rattle when you move it around when its off (or on), it's nothing to be worried about, as there is a hard drive in there, and there's a piece in it that will always have a little bit of give.

Unless its a serious rattle, not just a tiny little 'tick', I wouldn't worry about it.

It might possibly be the screw on the dock connector is loose inside. I read about someone else having the same issue. They opened theirs and tightened it, but I definitely would not recommend doing that as yours is still under warranty.

You can read about it here:

I've also read about other peoples iPods rattling too. If you're really concerned, I'd take it in while it's still under warranty as everyone else has said. It could possibly be the hard drive, but, imo, I doubt it's anything of consequence. I would just monitor it for a bit if I was you and if it gets worse take it in before your warranty is up.

Thanks for your replies:)

My iPod is not malfunctioning, so I'm not too concerned. But I will take it in to Apple just in case anyway, for them to have a look at, just in case it stops working suddenly after my warranty expires.

I have a slight "tink" rattle when I shift the ipod's orientation. I think it's the hard drive as well. But it makes that noise when the ipod is on or off. you'd think that it wouldn't have any loose parts to move around when the HD is active, but I can still make it rattle when it's on or off. No difference. I think this is common, but what did the apple dudes end up saying? (sorry for the thread revivial :)

What type of iPod do you have?

On my and my friend's iPod videos one of the hold switch screws worked its way loose and flew about for a while.

Every iPod I've opened has been packed tight. I'd guess a rogue screw and nothing HD related.
