iPod iPod 6 gen not seen by imac

can someone help please,
I haven't used my iPod for quite some time but thought it might come in handy in a class I'm taking. I plugged it into my iMac ( Early 2008 running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5) which charged the iPod but did not recognize that it was even plugged in. I opened up iTunes which connected to my iPad and iPhone wirelessly but did not see the iPod which was cable connected. It would be nice to sync them as there is some music now on the iMac that I want on the iPod.

Oh I tried rebooting and disconnecting....
