Hey Blackfang,
In simplest terms, the hdd is on it's way out the door.
It's what happens to all of them, it's just a matter of time when.
Honestly, if you knew a bit about it, you'd be better off just
scrapping the hard drive and going completely solid state in it.
The only pitfall you'd have is that since it's a 6th gen classic,
it has a max capacity of 128gb's, unlike the 7th, which is good
to at least 1tb. But, nevertheless, the good thing about it if
you wanted to upgrade it you can use a 128gb SSD in it, which
will give you a total of 119 available gb's after format. Another
nice thing about the ipod you already have with the thick back,
you could install a 1900mah extended life battery that will give
you over 100 hours of play time on a single charge....wow!
So, there is one minor set back which is the memory limitation,
but minus that, it's still well worth it compared to just installing
another hard drive. Total cost if you could do it yourself would
be around $130 for the 3 parts you'd need in order to complete.
You already have the thick back so the same headphone jack
can be used. The battery will be snug but fits good. Here's
the best part, like literally speaking, under normal operating
conditions, you'd have an ipod that basically would be fully
functional for at least the next 10 years, including life left
back in the battery. This could even be an understatement,
it's simply too early to tell as these mods have only recently
begun, within around the last 2 years now. It's in one sense
taking off now, in part because the price of memory is coming
down. Add that to the fact that it's solid state and you have
yourself a winning match.
If you knew how to disassemble the ipod and/or capable of
tearing it down you could possibly do it yourself and upgrade
it to a SSD drive & a Tarkan iFlash SSD adapter board.
It's all plug and play. When connected all back together
you'll be prompted to restore.
Check out the mod I built on this other thread I posted here:
