2 weeks ago I was out with a friend and he had me plug my iPhone (original 8 GB) into his alpine deck through a dock connector. Later that day, when I launched the iPod app again, it didn't go to the last song played with album art, it went to the playlist that the song was in. Turned the phone off/back on later in the day and the problem went away.

Got a 3GS a week ago, and restored from backup (backup was done after I shut the original off and "eliminated" the problem). And the problem has returned. Shutting off the phone and turning it back on has not made the bug go away.

Any advice? Thanks

I can't speak to the specific issue you are having, but I can say that in general it has been discouraged to restore from a backup of a first generation phone to a 3GS. The phones are so completely different internally that it has been causing a lot of issues for people. I would recommend restoring your phone without using the backup.

if I restore the phone, what am I going to lose? Will I have to manually put all my contacts back in (don't have them in address book, I manually put them in my original)

Yes, you will lose everything. If you have a mac, then why don't you just sync them to address book so they are ready to go back to your new phone?
