i would occasionally see ipod and mail opened in sbsettings/kirake when i never opened these apps. does the ipod.app have anything to do with any apps with sound? and does mail.app have anything to do with text messages?

i dont have mail setup at all. i dont use mail.

the thing is..it doesnt launch at boot. when i boot and check whats in process, only iphone and springboard is loaded.

Something has to be telling Mail to launch. Even though you haven't used it it might be still set to fetch or push. Just kill it in SB/Kir if you see it.

iPod will stay running in the back until you kill it or reboot. If you really want to diagnose this issue temporarily install backgrounder. That way you can visually see when those apps are running.

Don't worry, it uninstalls cleanly.

Get sbsettings. It shows you what is running in the background.

Mail is always running on mine unless I kill it, but as others said, email fetch opens the app and keeps it open.

iPod stays running after the first time I launch it. If I really need to free up RAM, I might close it myself, but I have a 3GS so I shouldn't normally need to worry about it. I have gobs of RAM :)

You don't use email????? That's crazy.

My thinking is that some app on your phone is telling the Mail app to open for some reason. If it really matters to you, kill the mail app and then go through and open up your apps and always check back in sbsettings to see which one is opening up your mail app. However, the Mail app is going to use up very very little memory if you don't even have an account set up, so I wouldn't even bother.

if you read my 1st post..i already said i have sbsettings and kirake (task manager).

i have a 3gs as well, im not worried about memory issue. doesnt bug me at all. i guess im a little OCD as to what apps stays open. i only want what i need to stay open. just a thought of why these apps open. its not a biggy to me. did a search and didnt see it anywhere. this could answer other people's curiosity as to why these apps open on its own.

ive been having this problem since day 1...

basically it comes down to this...and i can replicate this over and over.

If you open up settings and browse through, you Ipod app will open in the background.

If you open up contacts and browse around, it will open your mail app.

I have evverything turned off in settings, each account is set to manual, push is turned off and fetch is manual. This has happened to 2 different phones so far..so i know its not just my phone having issues. This in turn bogs your phone down cause its processing all the headers.

I have reported this as a bug...why? Simple, if you have your mail app closed and no mail inside that folder...if you open up contacts, the mail app will open and since it wasnt open prior, it will download your email headers.

There is a huge thread in the apple discussion forums about it...of course every Apple fan boy in the world is going to say it doesnt happen...but dont listen to them at all...99% of them are tools...people like Lawrence Finch and Allan Sampson, dont even read their threads, they both just sit and post all day long (which is why they have the most posts on the apple forums).

Go ahead and try what i said, open up settings and watch for the ipod app opening in the background, open up contacts and watch the mail app open in the background. Make sure they are NOT running to begin with.

Please define browse-through. I launched Settings, went to sounds, went to General and toggled iPod Controls, but iPod remained unlaunched. I'm on a 3.01 GS. Neither Kirikae nor the Badge indicate iPod launched. This is after a reboot, and I even launched iPod and quit it with Kirikae.

hmm seems intermittent to me, i rebooted and played around in settings and it didnt open...i resprung, open up settings and sounds, my ipod app opened in the background...killed the app via sbsettings and opened up settings, went to sounds, listened to a ringtone....checked SBSettings and it didnt open.

interesting...im not able to replicate this as well. i dont know what i go into that makes these app open up. i went to settings turned of push for mail and manual fetch.

My ipod will start if I plug in the apple earphones. Its been a long time since ive used those, but my ipod does sometimes open with other earphones. Thats the only time mine ever starts (3G and 3.0.1). It doesnt load on startup, but it stays running after using it. Maybe it will start at bootup is it was running at shutdown? I dont know because I never use it and kill it anytime it's on.

When I plug an audio cable into the bottom dock receptacle, iPod launches.

try this...

open up settings, general, about....this will open my Ipod app every single time.

i just was playing dungeon hunter and noticed when i closed the app that the ipod app opened in the background. Maybe has something to do with the sound of the game or something.
