iPod ipod battery wont charge

so i recharged my ipod a few days back and left it to do so over night. next morning i wake up and on the way to school i realize that my batteries dead. so i think.. hmm strange.. must have connected it wrong. so i do this 2 more times. then today, i plugged the ipod into the recharged and it told me that it was fully charged. but the moment i unplug it, it just kinda dies. has anyone else experienced this? any help would be greatly appreciated.

5th gen 60G. purchased it around april 2006.
