Does anybody have the camera connector for the 5G iPod? I just got a Canon SD-450 and will be going to Italy in the spring, so I want to know if a 5G iPod and the connector would be a good investment. I have a 3G iPod currently but i'm looking to replace it and have a 1 GB SD card for the SD-450. In Italy i plan on taking about 50 to 100 pictures a day. Basically, does anyone know how effective the camera connector is?

I do NOT have one, so I've wondered the same thing.

I've heard transfer rates can be really slow. In fact so slow that it can be a race against the battery. Some said it would be great if you could plug the iPod in to a Power outlet, but then that uses the connector also. (so you can't do that) I guess you just have to start with a fully charged battery and hope it has time to finish.
Because it takes so long to transfer, it's not a good idea for doing mid- way through a tour, but rather at night when you have 30+ minutes. (writing to the HDD can use the battery up very fast).

I wonder how the organization works. When you transfer your pictures to your iPod, does it automatically just give the album the name of the folder in the camera (usually some sequence of numbers) or does it let you name the album.

I have one and as was mentioned, yes the transfer rate is slow. It depends on how big the photos you are putting on the iPod are. My girlfriend had a Canon 300D which takes 6MP photos and using her 1GB card it took almost a full battery cycle to upload the photos.

If you want to get these photos onto you Mac (which I am sure you will) you need to mount the iPod into Disk Mode and then import the photos into iPohot as ar as I can tell. That is a bit of a bugger, it is not very Apple like and would be great if it was autmatic when you connected your iPod.

The reason that I have one is that when ever I go away and dont take my PowerBook with me (not very often!) I can easily empty the camera and not have to delete photos to free up space. After all it is cheaper than a new memory card for the camera.

Bascially it is a good idea but Apple could easily turn it into a great feature by:

1. Allowing you to connect the iPod to a charger when you uploading photos
2. Making it easier to get your photos into iPhoto

I agree the upload speeds are the fastest, but the connector is much cheaper than more memory cards and it serves the purpose in a pinch.

I would disagree with the lack of auto-import into iTunes. This is a"feature" myself and probably others would not like. Not everyone uses iTunes, if there was an option to pick iTunes or Aperture or do nothing than I would be all for it.

Maybe I could have explained better. If the iPod knew that it contained new photos (which it must be able to do) the folder containing the photos could be mounted in the same way as you get with a normal camera memory card.

So when you plug the iPod into your computer it doesn't automatically sync with iPhoto?

Also, when you are importing to your iPod from the camera, does it let you name the new album? How does that work?

thanks for the information. i might just wait until the trip to pick up another 1 GB SD card, they will be pretty cheap by then. I shoot at 1600x1200 and sometimes the option above it (can't remember it at the moment), so I should be able to hold at least 2000 pictures between the two cards. Thats more than 200 pictures per day for 9 days, so I think i will be just fine.

As far as I can tell you cant automatically sync with iPhoto which is poo (technical term there!). I am sure that you will be able to name you album in iPhoto when:

a) You have worked out how to import the photos, and
b) You have actually remembered in import the photos as you WILL forget because you are used to thngs happening automatically with a mac!
