ipod charge with macbook

Ok is it healthy to charge my ipod thru my macbook? and this is when the laptop is off so the harddrive is not spining.

nowadays they only give you the usb cord anyway......they kinda expect you to charge it thru your usb port......and they are making more money by not including it in the package! Thank god i got one with my iPod Photo

well....I have a 3rd generation so I got the firewire cable. I thought the usb cable doesn't charge it it just lets you upload or download stuff off of the ipod??
