I'm trying to figure out what the newest iPod is that will work with the old charger. the reason why I ask is compatibility with my Car iPod interface and I can't upgrade the charging cable with out paying a lot for it. This is what I have so far:

iPod Nano G2: works
iPod Nano G3: ???
iPod Nano G4: does not work
iPod Nano G6: does not work

iPod Classic G5 (30/60G): ???
iPod Classic G5 rev1 ((30/80G): ???
iPod Classic G6 (80/160G): ???
iPod Classic G6 rev1 (120G): ???
iPod Classic G6 rev2 (160G): ???

iPhone 4: does not work

From the sounds of it, the cable is Firewire based? What Apple did was they originally phased out syncing via Firewire, then a couple years ago even phased out charging for any Firewire-based products.

The 2007 iPods were the final ones that supported these cables for charging:

iPod nano 3rd gen
iPod touch 1st gen
iPhone

iPhone 3G, 3GS and all later iPod models won't be compatible - all earlier iPods will be compatible.

There is one exception - because Apple has been lazy and has virtually left the iPod classic untouched since '07, aside from changing its capacity, it still supports charging using Firewire cables.

So to sum up:

Hope this helps :)

Thanks!

Ivan P - Thanks! I was hoping that all the revisions of the Classic would work. I was assuming the Firewire charging was the key. Just didn't want to spend any more money with out confirming.
