iPod iPod classic: 160gb or 120gb?

i currently have an 80gb 5.5 gen ipod and i love it to bits. its fast and responsive, plays without any problems, and generally runs like a dream for me. im running out of space though and, considering how cheap the new classics are, im thinking of upgrading and replacing it.

question is, do i get a 160gb one or 120gb one? i wanted to get the 160gb one for two reasons: color and space. the 160gb one is "blacker" than the 120gb one, right? plus i want the comfort of having that much space in my pocket. don't mind it being a little bit chunkier either.

however, i read that the 160gb one can be a bit slow because it has 2 hard drives (or 2 disc platters?). i've seen videos too which show that the 160gb lags a LOT behind the 5.5 gen one that i currently have. plus, its a bit harder to find for me seeing as it has been discontinued. so im also considering just picking up the 120gb one if there's a trade off in speed.

any advice?

Since it is about space, I would go ahead with the 160GB. Double what you have.

i don't mind chunkier at all. as long as it fits in my jeans pocket comfortably, im happy.

however, are the slowness issues with the 160gb really that big? do they hinder the functionality of it? im one of those people who use their ipod 24/7 so i want it to be fast and functional. is the trade of in capacity big enough to ignore the speed compared to the 120gb?

Unfortunately it got stolen at the end of December 2007.

From what I remember I noticed little to no extra lag (unless you're browsing via coverflow) going from my 80GB 5.5G (which also has two platters like the 160GB) to the new iPod Classic.

The battery life was SUBSTANTIALLY better though.

Also the 160GB Classic will be about the same thickness as your 80GB, if not a little thinner.

so as long as im not using coverflow, the speed will be around the same as my current ipod? i'll be happy with that then. i have way too many albums to be using coverflow anyway. i'm actually happy with my current 5.5gen, i just really want to upgrade for the space.

looks like i'll be hunting for a 160gb this christmas then.

any idea on accessories and warranty? its a discontinued model so if i buy one in december, will i still have warranty on it? and will accessories be hard to find?

In your situation, I'd go for the 160 GB, and enjoy it. Great capacity, terrific battery life and sturdy iPod, it's an excellent machine.

You can still find the 160GB versions on the refurbished section of the Apple website.

Edit: On the US website, there are actually 2 on there right now... a black one and a silver one for $249.

(upgraded from a 4th-gen 20 GB model). This thing is immaculate!

I was going to get the 160 gb iPod for a graduation gift from my parents. But I knew they were coming out with new iPods at the time so I waited and now the have the 120 gb. I've decided I'm going to get the new 120 gb because it has the Genius function as well as the compatibility for the new iPod in ear headphones(when they come out lol) but, I would suggest the 160 gb unless you want the genius feature on the iPod itself...

oh, and It's nice to see another Rochestarian on the Forums (even though I'm moving to Orlando fl Saturday lol)

Well the mic and the volume controls wont work.

Hope they were cos i own an 80GB classic.
Generally the new in-ear headphones arent fully compatible with the old classics (80GB, 160GB).
though the sound will work just fine

All the controls (play/pause and next/previous) do not work with the previous iPods. So far Apple has not expressed interest in changing that. I think it's probably it's another marketing gimmick to persuade people to buy newer generations. I don't know if they'll do a software update, they just had one and it added the support for the earphones to the newer iPods. However, it did not mention anything for the older iPods, so I assume they won't have support or else Apple would have released them alongside the one for the newer ones. You could take a chance and see, but if they don't release it by December, then I wouldn't count on them ever releasing it.

When the Classics (and 3rd Gen Nanos) first came out, they were incredibly slow and unresponsive. I know this because I had both. 2 weeks later though they released a firmware update that made everything all better, so I wouldnt worry too much about the speed. If you are viewing something thats trying to show it lagging behind, it is probably because the review is old or the iPod hasnt been updated.
