Totally dead.
Replaced battery.
Still dead, totally dead
Any thoughts?

Possibly, it could be HDD failure. How old is it?

With the iPod classic (and I'm writing as a big fan of same) one of the problems was that a small, but consistently steady percentage of the classics suffered from complete HDD failure.

Actually, two of my iPod classics died completely on me - each time the HDD just died; fortunately, at the time, they were each still under warranty, and Apple replaced them without a murmur. Indeed, this excellent customer service was one of the key reasons I switched to Apple.

However, much though I love the classic (and I'm one of those who likes to have my entire music collection to hand in one portable device), I have to concede that a SSD (rather than the older style HDD, which is what it is equipped with) would be better, and more stable for the classic.

It's 5-6 years old, so I'm not complaining.
I definitely go my use out of it.

I'm going see what, if anything, happens on the 10th.
If they discontinue it or ignore it, I'll probably throw in a SSD.

Fair enough. Five to six years sounds like the natural end of life for a classic - mine is going on for four years old now, and - irrespective of what happens next week - I'll purchase a replacement so that I have it to hand when my trusty (and incredibly durable and wonderful) 80GB classic finally decides to pop its clogs.

You did well to get five to six years out of it; that sounds like a long-lived device, one you got plenty of use from.
