iPod iPod Classic 80GB - interesting problems...

I have an 80GB iPod classic. It's out of warranty. The battery will not hold a charge, this would be ok because I only use it in the car, where it's plugged in. The scroll wheel is also a little fussy, but works for the most part UNTIL you plug it in to a power source of any kind, when it does not function at all.

So you can see my catch 22. Should I spend any money on this thing? Replace the scroll wheel? Battery? I'd rather just bury it than replace both components it seems...thoughts?

I faced a similar issue of scroll wheel not responding when using with a third party charger...don't know what the issue is but i bought an original apple charger and it worked then...maybe you should do the same!

Replacing battery not as easy as I expected

I attempted to replace the battery on my 60 GB iPod. While removing the internal connector according to the instructions and tools that came with the new battery, the connector broke, and made the iPod entirely unusable. Be careful not to make matters worse than what you're dealing with now.

actually, from what i've heard, it can be a real pain to get inside the new classics. even iFixIt has a battery replacement listed as "very difficult". Maybe I'll just send it to a third party place.

I'd go straight for the refurbs on Apple's site rather than spend more money on it.

If it's over $50 to fix it, I would too. I wish I knew about the refurb store before I got all my stuff. I got my daughter a refurb 16GB touch and it looks and work like new. My next iPod will probably be a refurb also.
