iPod iPod Classic - Fix or Replace?

My trusty 80gb iPod Classic appears to have died. It says it is corrupted when I hook it up to iTunes and it will only load a few songs into it. I'm assuming the hard drive is bad.

My question is should I try to fix it or replace it? I am not very handy so don't want to get in over my head. I bought it used on eBay a year or so ago and its held up really well, including a good charge on the battery.

I'd fix it.

I got one from a friend that had a bad HDD, opened it up, bought a new 120GB HDD off eBay, replaced it and it was back in business.

Did the same thing with an older one, but put in a 64GB CF card, to prevent HDD failure down the line. Should last for years to come, and it's already 8 years old (2006 5.5G)

However, the classic can be a pain to open, but it can be done. Just make sure you've got a few opening tools, as you will likely destroy them in the process.

iFixit has a guide on the process, but it's a bit over the top with the putty knife. I did the whole thing with nothing but two iPod opening tools.

If you read through it and feel confident enough, go for it! If not, you can get them referred from many places, or if you don't need a ton of space, a current refurb nano from Apple isn't too bad.

fix it. I have had numerous ipods and fixed broken screens, headphone ports, hardrives. I got a 80gb classic in 2007 and the hdd broke, I recently dug it out and have decided to fix it by replacing with a better battery, bigger hdd (120gb) and a fresh backplate. All this can be bought as a package on ebay for £45 inc tools to open it. They are very easy taking it apart, once you do it and know how your ipod will last years to come.

Take it to an Apple store, you may be pleasantly surprised - I had them fix a similar issue to a 4th Gen iPod 40GB for free. Don't know what they did, they took it out the back for 20 mins or so, and it came back working.

Given the unwelcome news which has broken - that the iPo classic line is to be discontinued - I would recommend that you both fix the iPod and replace it….
