iPod iPod Classic lock desktop icon?

My aunt's ipod/macbook are at it again. whenever she plugs in her iPod classic, the macbook's itunes (i think that it's version 8; she doesn't update much) does not respond to it AT ALL. there is no ipod icon in the iTune's left column bar. On her desktop, the iPod's icon displays a small padlock in the lower left corner. help?
