For some unknown reason my iPod classic will no longer sync with iTunes

Have the most upto date version of Mavericks and iTunes

It recongises the device when connected to the Mac (it shows in iTunes on the device list) but it won't sync/update although there are now playlists showing on the iPod that I haven't created on iTunes

Other than this the iPod plays ok but it won't sync so I can't add anything to it...

Any ideas?
Thanks

When I upgraded to Mavericks, my 5th gen iPod nano's calendar, contacts and notes wouldn't sync. It appears Apple (for whatever reason) dropped local syncing from iTunes, so I reinstalled Mountain Lion. I liked Mavericks on the whole but needed that local syncing. Someone posted in the MacRumors Mavericks forum recently that local syncing will reappear in the 10.9.3 update.

Odd thing is that it was working and syncing fine until just last week, so it was working with Mavericks unless there was an update I've somehow missed seeing install?
