Ok so its an 80gb iPod classic and im using it with a Macbook Pro and a Mac Pro. And this is whats going on:

I plugged it in and itunes says it cant recognize it and that I need to restore it. So I did. And now Im in the process of adding all my music back to it. But now Ive noticed that sometimes on certain songs it freezes and I get the spinning ball for like 3-4 mins, then it just stops without ever playing it, and where the cover art goes (bottom left in itunes) it turns black. Also when I eject it from my comp it always goes back to the screen where it has me select the language.

Ive tried doing a hard reset now 4 times and even went in disc utility (on my mac) and ran the verify and repair tests with no errors but it always does the same things. Some songs work and some make the ball thing.

I also tried running diagnostic mode (on ipod) but when it came to the "FW" test I had to stop because I dont have FW ipod cable.

Im really close to giving up on this thing. Please help!!

Do you have the latest software update for the ipod installed?

Is it hanging on certain songs, or is it a random occurence? Maybe you'll have to try manually adding the songs one by one.

Hey thanks for trying to help pal!

yes I have the newest update and yes it hangs on certain (random) songs. so now what I was doing was going through song by song and when i got to one that made it freeze I would delete the whole album then add it back and then it would play fine. so now I know its not the actual audio files thats causing the problem.

But now, not 5mins ago, everything was just fine then all of the sudden it froze and wouldnt let me eject it, even in disc utility, so I turned my whole comp off then back on and now itunes says it cant recognize it and wants me to restore to factory! And in disc utility the verify and repair test come up with no problems. ugh. this is lame.

Hmm. I didn't know anyone still had classics. ;)

Factory restore will take a while but will probably heal what is ailing your ipod.

I know but i fill up my 32 touch too quick, and for some reason i reaaaaally need 80gigs of music on me at all times. :)

Anyway when you say Factory restore do you mean restoring through itunes? if so ive already done that like three times. ive also done it through disc utility.

Thanks man, but i already went through all that stuff and nothing worked. Its just having so many weird little problems i dont really know how to look for help. Because its not something specific.

Anyway i just tried erasing it in disc utility and it failed and says "cannot allocate memory". I dont know what that means, guess ill look into that when im not at work.

Was there a better place I should have posted this. I thought I would get more responses. Or is my problem just so fantastically retarded Ive stumped everyone.

You're in the right place, it just is that "fantastically retarded" I'm afraid. :p

My best guess is that it is a hard drive issue, but normally they exhibit differently ie the iPod won't turn on, won't show up in iTunes, freezes iTunes/disk utility and can't be restored or wiped or verified or anything.

If it's not the same songs every time and they're playing fine then I wouldn't imagine it's those files.

I'd try another iPod (if you can borrow one) to check it's not iTunes and after that I'm not sure where you could go except Apple or a repair place.

i have a similar problem to you, my 120Gb iPod Classic after doing an auto sync will restart then instantly say it needs to be restored. i sent it off to Apple to have them look at it to which they said there was nothing wrong hardware-wise. i then spent the next 2 days putting every song on individually to try find the culprit but to my surprise it worked perfectly fine. i still haven't managed to work out what the problem is but it is hella frustrating not being able to auto sync.

I have just purchased and repaired a broken 4th gen iPod that had HDD issues. I did some research on the restore process and this is what worked for me.
I attached the iPod to my iMac via usb and went to disc utility. In disc utility I selected erase. At the bottom of that screen there are security options, I selected 'zero'. I then clicked OK. This process took a bit of time ~1hr and when it finished i unmounted and disconnected the iPod and reconnected it. I then went through the set up process in iTunes and put a few songs on it. Next I put the iPod on repeat and left the screen always on (this was to drain the battery as quickly as possible) and ran it until dead. I put the iPod on a wall charger overnight and let completely charge the battery. I have had zero issues with the iPod since this repair.
Be aware that the iPod's hdd will be completely erased.
Good luck, Keith
