I recently changed the outer housing my my 80gb ipod classic, something I normally had a good success rate at, however, this time i plugged everything back in and a red X came up.

The weird thing was the it didn't even give the hard drive time to boot up it just came up on the screen maybe 4 seconds after the apple. And normally I would plug the battery in and it would boot up, this time I had to put it on the charger.

I'm thinking it could either be the mother board or the hard drive, but is most likely the motherboard? maybe even the hard drive connector.

Sounds like the hard drive ribbon cable to me, had to replace several when refurbishing 5th and 6th Gen Classics :p
