I've been driving myself mad trying to fix this all day. Here's the low down:
My 80gb iPod Classic went crazy and erased itself - not the first time - but it's usually not too terrible, because I just restore it and resynch my music, which takes a bit, but in the end no harm done.

This time, it's being particularly difficult. I plug the iPod in. iTunes launches, thinks for awhile, and then after about 20 seconds tells me both that the iPod needs to be restored, and that it's been disconnected. The iPod itself still acts as though it's plugged in, and even itunes still displays it under devices, but unfortunately even if I hit restore, it still tells me it's not connected. Then, if I let it sit, every 2 minutes or so it will reconnect itself and the process will repeat.

Now, I've tried restoring without iTunes several ways - first problem is, quitting iTunes immediately disconnects it, no matter what stage of the 'connection death cycle' it's in. I've removed the iTunes helper from my login items so it wouldn't launch (and restarted), but it still opens every time, so this rules out me trying YamiPod, which needs iTunes closed. I've tried using Disk Utility to repair it while iTunes is open, but it never gets too far before the iPod disconnects itself again. I've also tried putting it in disk mode, which lasts about three seconds, and then the iPod hard resets itself and then reconnects normally.

So, in summary, this is a huge headache. I'd like to save the iPod if possible. Any ideas?
