iPod iPod classic vs. iPod nano SHOWDOWN

Ok, I want to go out and buy either the new 8 GB Nano or the 80 GB Classic. I won't let myself get both, and I can't decide. Price is not a factor to me, since they are both pretty close, but "awesomeness" is a factor. The iPods I have previously bought have been the mini, and the 2nd gen nano. I don't really need a new iPod (does anyone really need one?), but I haven't bought myself something in a bit... and I freakin love this stuff. The Classic appeals to me because of the massive storage compared to my current players at 6 GB and 4 GB. The Nano appeals to me for the same reason as I bought my other players: it's super tiny, very awesome, and I would take it everywhere. Plus, I've heard it runs the new UI snappier than the Classic?

Anyway, in addition to comments, I decided to use a poll just to see how satisfied/blown-away people have been with each. My goal is to judge their awesomeness but your subjective opinions.

I own the 80g classic, and my GF owns the 8g nano...the nano is way more awesome than the classic. The classic is pretty blah, and not as interesting as the nano...no doubt an excellent device, but if awesomeness is what you are looking for, then the nano is the ipod for you...unless you wait for the touch.

The new nano is simply amazing! I could not believe it's beauty when it arrived at my house this past Monday. Pictures DO NOT do this thing justice.

The nano is very spectacular looks and everything just comes down to the capacity needed like all the answers to people asking this question online...if you don't need so much or don't for see your self needing that much then definitely get the nano if not for saving money...it's not like when the video just came out and you wanted it to show it off, it's pretty much the same as before nothing special.

Yeah... I'm getting the impression the Nano is the hotter of the two. I think the only reason I am a little drawn to the Classic is because I have never owned any generation of the "classic" pod. Also, as for me using it with a speaker dock for my room/apt, it would be pretty cool to keep my entire library on one device.

Is there any reason you're not looking at an iPod touch? With regards to "awesomeness" factor, the touch is the coolest, IMHO. Plus, it's totally different from what you already have.

If the touch is off limits for one reason or another, I'd go with the classic in your situation. Since you already have a nano (even though there's quite a difference between the G2 and G3 nano, they're still basically the same product).

Actually, I left that out for a reason... someone already pre-ordered that for me. Since I was planning on buying the Touch already, and someone else bought it for me before I could, I have that money I set aside for myself burning a whole in my pocket.

Which brings me back to: Classic or Nano. Since I probably have enough iPods, I should probably just give my money to charity, but I'm struggling to pay my way through law school and it took me some time to set this money aside after the iPod rumors came out. Working 30 hrs a week and going to law school full time makes me want to give myself a present.

If you've already got an iPod touch on the way and have $200 burning a hole in your pocket, I can think of MANY better ways to spend it rather than having 2 new iPods. And even if you want to buy an Apple product with that money I'd recommend buying an AppleTV over buying a 2nd iPod.

Ignoring the fact that you have a touch on the way, I can tell you the nano is a sweet little (and I mean little) gadget.

I didn't need it either but after seeing it in person, I couldn't resist. It is stunning when you see it up close and the quality of the screen is amazing. Though I would never watch a full length movie on it.

I also have a 1G nano but have gotten used to my 5G ipod video since getting it last year. Now that I am back with nano (this time the new 3G), I am reminded how fast these things react. Noticeably faster than the regular hard drive based ipods. Mostly when turning on and off and selecting a song to play. Almost instant.

If money is burning a hole in your pocket, then go for it. I have nothing against the ipod video/classic but these new nanos ooze coolness.

I most likely will be heading out and picking up a 80 GB Classic within a week or so. Ive looked at the new nano but its WAY too small. It might be ok for people w/ smaller hands but not for me.
Also the Touch seems to be worthless. The fact that it only comes in 2 small HD sizes just kills it. If it came in an 30/80 gb...I might pick one up but not till then.

touch already on the way makes me lean towards the classic even more then the only thing that might push me towards a nano at this point (were I in your situation) would be that the physical size of the classic and touch are about the same, whereas the nano is much smaller. So, if there's times when you might want something a bit smaller the nano would be the way to go. On the other hand, if you have a lot of music or movies, the classic would let you bring them all with you.

Coming from somone who has owned both the New Nano and now the Black 80gb Classic id say go with the Classic.

Reasons? Well i walked into my local best buy with the intentions on buying the 8gb nano. Seeing as i already have an 8gb iphone i didnt wanna spend to much money on the 160gb or even a touch. I went ahead and purchased the nano because of how awesome it looked and the concept of such a small device that can do so much intrigued me. No farther than when i got back to my car, took it out and started thinking about it while playing with it i realized that the "WOW" factor on the new nano would soon wear off. Its amazing at first dont get me wrong, but i cannot justify paying only 50 bucks less for something that holds 8gb of data compared to 80gb, regardless if i need the storage or not, knowing i have it just means something. And i know your all saying well" i dont need 80GB so the 8gb will be fine and it llooks cooler" once your holding it it does seem so awesome that this little thing can do so much. that is until you actually envision yourself using it everyday. Not only is the click wheel so small that anyone with regular size hands would have a hard time navigating it, it feels to fragile to te point where you kind of dont wanna take it out anywhere.


I too was amazed at how cool this thing looked but once you have it first hand and set aside the fact that just looks good, take into account that you can have a ipod classic with 80gb of storage that does the exact same thing as the nano and all you sacrifice is a little bit bigger of an ipod and only $50 more. You dont know how much storage you will ever need, the fact that i have it available if i need it and i can load an insane amount of music and movies and photos without worry calms me. that and the fact that it can be used as external hard drive enabling disk use.

I hope this changes anyones mind out there who is only amazed by the nano because of how "cool" it looks.

You dont make sense. The touch is irrelavent because the one thats "$50 more" has the same capacity as the 8gb nano. also doesnt make sense since i already have the iphone which also makes the touch irrelavent. This thread was for the ppl who were deciding between the classic and the nano because of looks vs capacity. the touch doesnt fit in there anywhere.

Actually it's about 100 bucks more than the equivalent nano. The iPod classic is a totally different beast.

But you could say that for 50 bucks more than a nano you get 10 times the storage.

My point was he was looking at the 8GB nano, for $50 more he could get a 80GB iPod Classic, for another $50 he could get an iPod Touch 8GB, for another $50 he could get a 160GB iPod Classic, for another $50 he could get an iPod Touch.

The nano and the classic are completely different. The only thing they share is the same UI.

Different form factor, different screen, One has a HDD other has flash, different battery, etc, etc, etc.

Im sure the whole ipod buying world looks into whether which type of drive they use, or dpi resolution of the screens, and battery life to the minute. The point being made was the main differences between the classic and the nano and if you actually read through the thread instead of popping in half way and criticizing the last post made you would see the person that my posts were made at had no intentions of finding out the detailed specs like you posted. All he wanted was advice as to which one he should get based on the need for capacity or lack of and how "cool" the nano looks.

Ok, here's the update, straight from the OP.

I went to the Apple store today and checked out all of the new iPods. To be honest, the new Nano rocked me at first just by being so damn thin and tiny, but I'm still not a huge fan of the wider body, the UI lagged a bit, and there's still the capacity issue. Since my last-gen nano does the trick for songs on the go with 4 GB, I will be going with the 80 GB Classic for a balance of form and function. I like the capacity (my library can almost all fit on it), it's really not that thick (the 160 GB crosses that line a little), and it's sexy. I've always loved the aluminum and I'm glad they brought silver to the video/classic iPod. Also, the 2.5" screen is more pleasant for any video at all, and even when looking at the new UI. And did I mention that it's sexy?

Oh, and while I was there, I got sweet talked by a product (red) shuffle that kept looking at me and picked that up too. I am such a chump for apple.

Not buying it, functionaly I see them as being quite different. I think that from a usage model perspective the nano and classic are just as different as the classic and the iTouch; each meets the needs of a different type of user. The classic appeals to those who feel the need to carry around their entire library while the nano is geared towards those who are willing to give that up for a device that is much easier to carry around. I used to be the former. When making the choice between my 5G iPod and a 1G nano I decided that I'd be better served by the larger capacity. Months latter I got a free 1GB nano when I bought my MacPro. I found that while the 5G iPod was perfect for the car, I much preferred to carry around the nano. Granted even with syncing every day or so 1GB was getting to be to tight, but 8 GB should fill my need fairly well. My 30GB 5G typicaly only has 7GB or so on it at any time. So I see quite a lot of difference between the classic and nano when it comes to what best fits my needs.

Adokimus - congrats on your purpose, and I'm certain you've made your sister very happy, if not a little jealous.
