Ever since I saw the iPhone, I had a big reservation on in-pocket iPod control.
When I use my iPod, I look at it to select playlists or artists. But then for most of the subway ride or whatnot, I usually just wanna skip a song, and control volume. What's great about the click-wheel, is that you can do both things while it's in your pocket.
with the iPhone - iPod mode. Yea, it looks neat, but I was REALLY worried you'd lose the ability to control that thing while leaving it in your pocket. And since Apple discontinued the iPod clip-on controller for the new ones, it got me worried.
during the new walkthrough, the guy (isn't he VP of iPod software or something), showed how with the new headphones with squeezy-mike - you can pause / skip songs. That, combined with the physical volume buttons on the side of the iPhone = pretty good in-pocket control. I just wish they found a way of controlling volume with the sqeeezy thing ?, not sure how. Maybe if it had an integrated scrolly wheel or something.
I guess the downside is you're stuck using these headphones if you want this type of control. But it's possible there will be a re-introduction of a 'remote' where you can use your own.
so for me, personally, a big issue with mostly-touch controls has been addressed with a workaround I'm pretty satisfied with.
