iPod Ipod has 2.91 Gigs in "Other"??

I have a 20 gig ipod....Recently I see that my "other" space in my ipod is taking up 2.91 gigs of space.... I am very near the end of my limit of space. How can I get rid of this 2.91 gigs? (I have no other files on my ipod---artwork is not activated, no podcasts, no photos loaded--- nothing but music as far as I can tell-----Can you help? Greg

I know there's always a bit of space taken up by the software that runs the ipod, but 2.9 gigs sounds a bit much (I unfortunately don't have my ipod in front of me at work to verify this though).

Did you ever use your ipod in disk mode? Maybe you left some files on it. Otherwise, I would just restore the iPod to factory settings (as long as all your songs are on your computer) to clean it out.

Check if there is anything on the disk. I use mine similar to a flash drive and I forget to delete things off of it. The other could be the operating system files or whatever the ipod runs on but I doubt it should take up 2.9 gigs. You're positive that there are no photos or ipod artwork on there?

Yep, I couldn't find any files on the ipod at all other than my music...As a last resort I did a "restore" on my ipod to it's original configuration....I am in the process of loading back the 16 gigs of music on it now...It seems to have cleared up the problem....I never used it for anything other than my music and audio books....I can only think that it is some kind of error or corruption in the software somewhere....
Oh well....It was easy enough to fix with the restore feature...

I had the same problem, when I finally found the files there were bogus file like 0xxx00000011.xx (and so on) just taking up space.

I'm not sure if it was a bug, virus or whatever but I updated my Nano to the newest patch and did a restore and it was perfect after that.

Put the ipod in disk mode and reformat it then restore it in itunes, Then all will be right with it. sounds like your hard drive in your computer was Cashe'ing to it Don't leave it plugged into your computer any longer than you need too.

If you have a Mac, select your Ipod drive, and then empty your trash. Macs do not automatically delete items on a jump drive until you empty the trash.

to get rid of the "others"

With any flash drive, if you have removed items from it by putting them into the trash, the flash drive still allocates space for those items, (even though they disappear from the drive menu) until the trash is emptied.

So if you have anything in your trash that came off you Ipod, go ahead and empty your trash and the "others" disappear.

Did what you said. Thanks. It worked. Had 17.1 gb of "other" space taken up, and growing. Couldn't figure what was using this space. Very frustrating! Glad for your comments.

Those are system files so be aware of it

Yes. those are indeed system files. Some amount of them is inevitable and they are created when you add and remove files from your iPod. They are the indexes of deleted files and current files. By count, about 0.3% by number. So, if you had 7,000 files of 4MB each (about 27GB), you'd have upwards of 1GB of "Other" on your drive. This was measured from an iPod Video 60GB model. Unfortunately, these indices are not cleared when you delete files off the drive in "drive" mode. iTunes takes care of these when Synching Music, but the OS may miss them in "drive" mode.

My "Other" had crept up to .99 gigs on my iPod Touch, and I suspected it was mainly album covers, lyrics I'd added etc.
I have just done a restore in iTunes and it's down to .21.
So I reckon it's worth doing a restore every so often.
