iPod Ipod icon not appearing on desktop/in finder, but can sync in iTunes no problem

What it says on the tin:

Attempting to backup some files, as I'm having the beginnings of hardware issues. Heading to the apple store tomorrow, but need to backup (I have a suspicion OS may need reinstallation, or they will try).

However, previously i have never had a problem accessing files in my ipod. I've been fiddling with folder settings recently, what could I have done? iTunes is fine, but need to put data not music on it.
