Preface: I am in no way coming on here to complain about the iPhone. I love my iPhone, and the OS. A few minor tweaks could make it even more enjoyable.

One small thing I am hoping for in OS 4.0 is more controls while using the iPod function in landscape mode, and here's why:

I use the Navigon Mobile Navigator app as my turn by turn GPS in my car with the iPhone mounted horizontally in my dash like the picture below. I'm not a huge fan of the iPod controls built into the Navigon app because it forces you to create a playlist as opposed to selecting an album and click play, so I use backgrounder and switch back and forth from the built-in iPod and the Nav app. The drawback is that in landscape mode, the only control you have over the iPod app is play and pause. You can't skip forwards or backwards without clicking on the album cover, and scrolling to select a new song, and this can be dangerous while driving.

I wouldn't mind if they just added the extra buttons to move forward or backwards in coverflow, but they could also make an option to disable coverflow and just turn the vertical iPod interface for similar use while in landscape mode.

Has anyone else used their iPhone in this way and felt the need for similar tiny modifications to the iPod app while forced to use your phone in landscape mode? (Yes I know that the Nav app also works in vertical mode, but my audio cable won't reach the top of my phone when it's mounted vertically on my windshield, and I just like the Nav app better in landscape anyways.)

Anyone? Is there maybe a jailbreak app that could add this functionality?

I use an app called Fluxtunes that supports rotation and uses screen taps and swipes along with gestures and multitouch support for controls, works brilliantly.

In my opinion a touchscreen device will never be as good of an iPod as one with actual buttons on it. I know that doesn't really help, sorry.

That said, you should look into car control interfaces which can control the iPod controls from your steering wheel, etc.

Not to be a smug prick but you shouldn't be messing with a mounted iPhone while driving...

Are you telling me that you never personally, or should never change radio stations on your dash, or adjust your air conditioner while driving? Pressing a forward or backward button on a mounted phone is no different, especially when it's your Nav system and you have to glance at it periodically anyways.

To go out of your way to make an insignificant comment like that, you better be the type of driver that keeps your hands at 10 & 2 and wouldn't even look away if someone spilled hot coffee in your lap. C'mon now.

Home button

One thing you can try is to turn on "iPod controls" in your Home button settings.
(Settings -> General -> Home)
Then when you double-click the home button while music is playing, it will bring up th iPod controls pop-up - even on top of the cover flow.

I tried it on my 3GS. Seemed to work ok, and it might help you in landscape mode.
