I have a pretty decent home stereo set. When I play my Ipod through the receiver I get a rich full sound, great bass, etc...

I recently bought a high end Dell Inspiron (i Know no Apple) and was interesed in just playing my itunes through the laptop into the receiver. It was cool to get a full Album Artwork screen.

The problem is the sound output from the laptop through the receiver absulutly sucks. It sounds like its comin from a mile away, almost zero bass.

Is that just the way it is? Is the laptop not designed to generate the same sound quality as the Ipod?

Has anybody experienced something similar? Are there any helpful suggestions?

Thank you in advance

How did you have your iPod wired to your receiver? And how do you have your notebook wired to it? And out of curiosity, what receiver do you have?

I had the Ipod hooked up with the duel ended jack into the receiver.
I connected the laptop with that same cable.

I have a higher end Onkyo Receiver

if you meant 1/8" (3.5mm) to stereo RCA in the back of your receiver then that is good.

buuut yeah iTunes has an EQ built in to it so you can try doing some Pre and Post EQ with your Laptop and your Amp.

as previously stated, you could use the Airport Express (as i do) to route your signal through it.

make sure your volume isn't above 60%-70% on the computer (or it will break up and ruin your signal integrity).

mess around with your output volume. your iPod may have been in the sweet spot boosting your preamp to the perfect zone, and your computer may be too loud.

I too have an Onkyo receiver that I use with my iPhone and various iPod's via a similar connector that I feel works great. Let me try and hook my MBA up to it and see if I have any problems. It's definitely not a good comparison as you have a Dell, but if I witness issues and tweak some settings with my MBA through iTunes maybe we can find a fix. I've got a mid-range Onkyo that I'll try it on. Pretty sure it's the 805, but it could be the 705. It's been a year or so and i forgot.
