Firstly i have a very old (and v cheap) 1982 ford laser. It had a really old and really bad head unit with a tape player in it, originally I played my iPod mini through a tape adapter, but the quality was poor and the volume too low. I then decided to get an amp of ebay (4 x 150W (Max)).
I pulled out the cigarette lighter and used the power from that to power up the amp and then i plugged an RCA->male headphone jack adapter into the "low" input of the amp. Now whenever I get into my car i unplug my ipod headphones and plug it into the amp, the result is surprisingly good quality (and if need be, very loud) sound. I no longer have a head unit (my ipod is my head unit).
I am not worried about any of the electrics in the car, but i am worried if i could be damaging my mini by having it directly into the amp without a pre-amp or something.
I have been running it for about 2 months now on an almost daily basis and everything seems fine, but I would like to hear from someone who knows about this kinda stuff.
Cheers
