I thought I'd share my good fortune resurrecting a long forgotten iPod mini.
For the better part of 5 years we've used this iPod mini as a pretend phone for my daughter or a potential trade-in or something. It's never powered on or been used in that time. It's been dented and dinged and chewed on.
I took it all apart and pulled out the hard drive from the logic board and reseated the battery and hard drive and it started to charge??? Then gave the folder icon and click of death. So I went about doing a CF card swap.
Old failed 4GB microdrive
iPod mini hooked up to verify I didn't break anything
New 32GB CF card and ribbon cable
Assembled Logic Board
32GB iPod mini in iTunes.
It's Alive!!! Battery still holds about an hour of play time. But we will use it in a dock in the kids room to play music. Woo hoo!
