HEY!
So here we go...
I spent something ridiculous like 7 hours the other day ripping a 25-minute movie from DVD to my laptop. The reason? I just got an iPod Nano 3g - the cute little square one - and am excited that it plays movies!
The file is saved as an mp4 and plays both in iTunes and quicktimes. But, when I plug in the iPod and try to drag the video into it, it says this iPod cannot play that file.
The woman I spoke to at apple - who, while nice, didn't sound that techno-savvy - said "iTunes just knows the difference between a file you bought through the iTunes store and a file you didn't."
Any ideas how I could get this file to play on the biddy baby nano?

After i've done that part, i've always had to select the file in iTunes and say "Convert File for iPod" - even if it should already be in the right format (like from my EyeTV).

On iTunes 7 it's Advanced->Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone (when you have the file selected in the library).

After that it worked fine for me.

That woman is full of it :p
Seriously, I have ripped dozens upon dozens of DVDs (mine, and for my use only) and synced them to my iPod via iTunes with no problems. Ever.
What programs did you use? I got the best results using Handbrake and iSquint (the latter only if you have a Mac).

Funny you told someone who works at Apple that you tried to do that.:p

Funnier she didn't know what she was talking about.:D

I used handbrake. I didn't do the mactheripper thing first, though... I just went straight into ripping the DVD.
Now i'm doing the iTunes convert thing suggested by TraceyS.
Sure takes a while, though! :)

I've been able to convert .MOV files to the 640x350 .MP4 format used by iPods that can play video with iTunes 8.0.2. But you're right--the conversion time can be quite long if the file is high quality to start with.

So the download was going so/so... I had left the computer alone for a while and while I was gone it got to about 1/3 of the way done. That was at least 2 or 3 hours ago, and it hasn't progressed anymore, even though it says it's still converting.
I was going to try quitting iTunes and re-opening it, but it says that if I quit I'll lose the success I've had so far. Any ideas? :(

ohhhh my godddd I'm SO MAD... I hit the "stop" button because I figured, it wasn't working anyway... may as well. And it stopped, but right before it did it showed me that it was actually 3/4 of the way done and I stopped it for no reasON~!!!!!!! so now I have to start over ::thud::

OOO thank you so much TraceyS for the suggestion!!!! I haven't done the longer one yet because it's really good quality so it was taking FOREVER. But just to test if its even WORTH waiting, I did a really short (less than 1 minute) movie I have... and it worked!!! I can watch it on the nano now!!! So thank you so much for this, I'm gonna get the other one started RIGHT NOW!!!

I'm seriously so pleased.

Yahoo!!!

Glad it worked.

Now, someone help us NOT have to do it! LOL!!

I had that file that i exported in EyeTV supposedly in the iPod format and it wouldn't play/transfer. Drove me crazy and i then i did the convert thing - and it worked. It had been awhile since i'd imported anything i hadn't bought.

My kids are getting Nano's for Christmas and i have a TON of MPEG2 files that i'd like to covert easy/quick for them, but i can tell it's going to take more time than i thought.

I'm just glad to have had an answer - sometimes.... well, i wonder about myself! :p

Hahaha.

Are you getting them the newest nanos for xmas?
I've heard that apple has made it even harder to get any non-iTunes files on there. But I don't remember EXACTLY where I heard that, I just remember reading it when I was deciding between the 3g and the 4g.
(4g really would have had to be AMAZING for me to choose it, because to me the 3g wins every time when it comes to form factor hahaha)
