iPod Ipod Nano 3G won't work with OS X 10.3.9?

Hi All,
I purchased a 5.5G video a few months back and have been sucessfuly using it on my G4 OS X 10.3.9. I purchased my girlfriend a new nano today and gave it to her as an early X-mas gift. I plugged it into my computer and to my surprise, it told me that I needed OS X 10.4.8 or higher to use the iPod on my computer. After scaveging the website for updates, and being on hold for nearly an hour, a tec-specialist informed me that I need to purchase 10.4 or 10.5. Besides the obvious purchase of 10.4, or using my gf's twenty million year old laptop, is there any way around this? I realize operating systems become obsolete, but it just seems wierd that my 5.5 Generation worked fine but this nano doesn't. Thanks in advance.

No, it will not work with any OS pre-10.4. I know someone who had to upgrade her ibook G4 to leopard (also involved new RAM and HD) just to use a new nano. I don't know any way around this.

It never ceases to amaze me that there are people out there who feel all high and mighty sitting behind thier computer screen putting other people down. I'm not going to go any further with this seeing that this has probably been a topic discussed ad nauseum when the new Nanos were first released. Thanks QCassidy352 for your honest response.

That sucks, This also has happened to my Cousin he just updated to panther and now he knows he can't get a new iPod unless he also has money to update. That's terrible that apple does that to consumers.

In one respect it's terrible, but Tiger is how old now? I still run 10.3.9 on my home Mac G4, so newer iPods won't work with it at the moment. A 5.5 gen video, or 2nd gen nano, refurbished from Apple, would fit the bill if you don't need the "newest" gadgets.

If the iPod is a gift, that's a tight situation. Either update to 10.4 or sell the iPod & get an older model.

Keep in mind iPod sales drive OS and computer sales, which helps Apple's bottom line. When you think about it, companies like Apple need to ensure themselves revenue flow; they don't care if the end user has to pay more to enjoy the new goodies.

I do realize Tiger is a little old now. It has been working perfectly fine for me for the most part over the past few years. It was just a shock to have my 5.5 work great on it, only to have the new Nano not work at all. It just stinks that my original $199 gift has turned into a $300+ investment to upgrade the system. Now I know how my dad felt when we told him his new Quicken accounting software wouldn't run on Windows 95.

I downloaded iTunes to my gf's laptop and after 1 1/2 hours finally got it installed. Now we are in the process of burning my entire music library to cd's and transfering them to her system. Will I be able to burn my converted .mp4 video files from Handbrake to cd-r's so she can have video as well?

I'm in the same boat, and I have been going google crazy in search of an answer (something that doesn't require $- I already blew my savings on the ipod). Have you tried downloading a torrent. I'm not very computer/internet savvy, but I don't think the internet police will come knocking on your door if you are able to download a pirated/ripped version of 10.4.

Remember, as far as Apple is concerned, the iPod and iTunes are a single unified "system". Buy a 3-year-old iPod and it'll work just fine with a 3-year-old computer. Buy a current iPod, expect it'll require a current operating system.

Well it turns out her Mum's XP machine will sync with the G3 iPod - so we'll have to go with that for now.

Life has to move forward, the reason you require new OS's is because its difficult to keep writing software for old OS's as you can't use the new frameworks.

Too bad the marketers at Apple alienate long term customers. They should listen to what is being said. There is no technical reason - its just up-selling. IMHO its very disappointing for Apple. I should have bought something other than an iPod.

Really, really disappointed in Mac.
I'm in the same boat here and it seems there are many others (that tiny 4pt type in grey on the back of the pack has got to be an infringement of consumer laws I'm sure).
As a dedicated mac user both professionally as well as privately I just didn't think they'd be making new ipod's incompatible with a system still selling as new in some Mac stores just over two years ago.
It's seems that PC's might be the best way to go if you don't want to outdated after two years... thanks Mac (we can tell you really value your users).

Yes, the reality is that iPods are supported better on PCs than on Macs. SJ knows what Mac users want and we have no say in it.

I somehow doubt that most Mac users who buy an iPod that requires 10.4 will switch to Windows. Some, yes. Most? Come on!

Once you go Mac...

You can always buy a last-gen iPod and use it with 10.3.

i have the same exact problem bud.. the only thing you can do is go to

File....

Backup to disc...and burn your library down to discs..(have alot) and this wont hurt the library.

when done..just go to a newer computer with maybe tiger..or leapord andput the discs onto that library.

sync the 3g nano with the itunes and get the songs you want.


P.S. If you dont have alot of discs, then pick and choose wisely.
