I'm looking to buy a new DAP, but I still can't find the "right" one. The current iPod Nano would be perfect, save for the mediocre sound quality and relatively poor battery life...

So, with rumors of a new iPod Nano circulating, does anyone foresee any improvements to either (1) SQ, or (2) battery life?

Ideally, I would like the SQ of the Sony X1000, the battery life of the Cowon S9 (55h!), and the compact form factor/UI of the iPod Nano. Naturally, I don't expect such a product to be released, but I would love to find something that's relatively close to it.

I'm open to non-Apple recommendations as well )

Perhaps "rumours" was the wrong word. Doesn't Apple usually release new iPods after the back to school promotion? I figured with this talk of a new camera, there might be some additional information that the hardcore Apple fanboys might know of.

So I take it there will be no substantial improvements to either SQ or battery life? Or are we just in the dark at this point? Thanks for the help.

Rumors means we've actually HEARD something about a specific model.

Apple themselves have said that there will be new iPods in September, so that isn't a rumor.

Not semantics in the least. "Rumor" has a different definition than that which you were applying to it.

And since you didn't catch it, we've heard nothing. 2x capacity is the only thing of which we can be 80% sure.

Really? Based on what? Where did you get 80%? And how can you confirm those other features you mentioned earlier? Is it fact? Or rumour?

What I did catch was your inability to answer a simple question politely. On that note, have a good day.

Anyway to try and answer your question. Most definetly the battery life will improve and I really dont know about the sound quality as I have never had a problem with it. Oh and TS didnt you read the front page that says the new nanos and touches might get cameras?

Every year capacity doubles. The other features are logical assumptions based on current trends.

Yes, but I'm not putting much stock in it. The iPod touch, maybe, but the iPod nano? Nah.

I think the Touch is a definet but I also think the Nano is definet too. I mean what else could they do to it to make it different from the current one?

The Nano could get a wider 16x9 screen.
Looks like it may get a camera too.
Memory may increase for the same price, or the added features may be what keeps the 8gb and 16gb models at the same price.

I forgot to but that in my other post. I think the capicity will increase to 32gb. $149-16gb $199-32gb

That's not the point. It doesn't have to be "different" every year. The original iPod hasn't changed since the 4th gen. It will stay the same.

Yes it did. The ipod video came after that. And the Touch and Nano are Apple's most popular iPods now so they are going to be updated more.

Why do I have this feeling that in the end, Apple will drop the camera functionality in the new 5G iPod nano?

I think the reason is simple: provide more interior space for a larger battery, especially I do think Apple will go to a true widescreen display with the 5G nano, which means more battery usage to keep up with the larger display unless Apple switches to an OLED widescreen panel. Also, we may see the maximum capacity increased to 32 GB, too.

iPod Nano 5th Gen. - Expectations

Hopefully, Apple will provide a camera-free option (limited colors fine with me) since some places I take it forbid camera-laden devices inside. What tops my "want" list? Better battery life and a solution to the "freezing" on my current iPod Nano. Increase the capacity of txt files that can be stored on the iPod Nano and permit them to be displayed in a larger font. Doc file storage capability would be very nice indeed. I'm thinking about replacing my current iPod Nano, but will wait until the new ones appear before making a decision.
