how long is a full charge suposed to last? Mine is going low quickly...1 hour I would say. Is this the average? I expected such a product to run 6 hours at least

I bought one for my daughter for Christmas and I was also surprised at the (seemingly short) duration of a full charge. Obviously the more you use the interface and the louder and brighter you have it, the shorter the battery life but she is still able to get more than an hours worth of playtime with it.
If you still have applecare perhaps you could try and get a replacement. It's always worth the try.

1 hour just sounds wrong.
Mine runs for over a day on a single charge, sometimes more depending on how much I actively use the interface. There isn't much you can do with the new nano other than listen to music. In that hour, are you constantly switching screens back and forth? I just can't imagine it dying in that short period of time.
