iPod iPod Nano 6th Gen, Owner Thoughts.....

Got it today, some of my personal thoughts and suggestions, chime in if you have some as well.

A: resolution looks poor after looking at iPhone 4.

B: no percentage option for battery ????

C: cannot choose a picture to use as backround ????

D: "swipe" back in the "now playing" screen is annoying, going to album art and then background.

E: so much space up and down between names of "artists", "composers", "songs" and so forth, could put half the spacing and be perfectly legible and actually see more than 3 on each page.

should have "swipe" after top button like iPhone? Should also have swipe to turn off if u hold top button like iPhone.

we have had most of the above stuff for a while in iPhone, why wouldnt you add this to you "sick new nano"

Because the new Nano's are not running iOS or even iOS Lite. They are running something else that was made to look like iOS.
 
Why don't u just add the fact that it has no Wi-fi, no GPS, no front and rear facing camera? Oh.. throw it no camera flash, too?

Iphone 4 is a smart phone. But, yea... sure we can compare them each other.

i dont think asking for battery to be displayed in % and choosing a picture for background is out of this world.. if it has a pictures folder.. and you can choose pictures for background, then why cant this be integrated?

if it has a battery sign, then why cant this become an option?

the rest is programming, they didn't put much thought into the software imo.. it seems like some monday detail to me.
 
You guys are really expecting a lot from the new Nano. I have an iPhone 4 and I still bought it. Been using it for 3 days straight now and I really love the fact that I am able to listen to the radio and 'song crossfade' feature is great.

I personally think Apple crippled it from other features because of the current battery technology. I tried using a bluetooth adapter with it and the battery went down fast.
 
What about no contact and calendar support? If my 5 year old iPod 5G can have them then why can't this thing?

I just don't see why they removed this feature from the nano OS. While I'm not a computer programmer, I just don't think its a massive technical challenge to add this most basic of features.
 
It's obvious apple just wants to make us suffer, so they can sell new ones next year.
 
I like the size. I like the clip on the back. I find it generally very easy to use, and have noted a definite improvement in the sound on my old Nano which is really pleasing.

The loss of the video feature may annoy some, but it does not bother me; nor did I ever use the contacts and calendars feature.

What I find annoying is

1. The fact that there is no physical pause/resume play button (I may get used to this, but not yet).

2. I am really disappointed that the screen does not display the track length in elapsed and remaining time. For anything over a three minute pop song this is a really useful feature, and I find it very frustrating that it has gone.

3. I can't work out why cover flow has been dropped, either, but I suppose I can cope without that.

4. The backgrounds are really drab and dull, and like others, I would love to be able to select my own photo. Seems a curious omission.
These are just initial observations.

If there's no progress bar then it's pointless for listening to podcasts.

For me "personally", none of these issues are of concern. I wanted a new "music" player to replace my aging and sometimes quirky ViPod with more capacity than the shuffle. Nothing more, nothing less. If I wanted more I would have purchased the iPod touch. Oh, I already have an iPhone:rolleyes:, so I don't need a touch. This is the perfect workout device, and with a good set of earbuds with remote, I'm in music heaven.
 
Heh my biggest gripe is no capacity updates, I could probably get over the touch screen and all the dropped features [after all I only use my iPod for music anyway] if they would have updated capacities.

The percentage thing with the battery? Apple has never done that in the past why would they start doing it now?

D, the nano should have never went touch screen in the 1st place..or at least not how they've done it. So I'd agree I bet the swiping is annoying as heck especially since it can barely hold any icons on the screen or text for that matter.

Resolution on the screen? c'mon its 1.5" big, what are you going to view on that little screen that would make it so important to have a great retina resolution.

Picture as a background? Yeah that'd be nice, but clearly apple half assed the nano model anyway. The interface is so plain its ridiculous.

There should be more space on the screen you're right, in fact, the screen should be larger than last years model not smaller.

Even with all the complaints I have for this years release, all apple had to do was increase the capacity and I would have bought it...but no we are stuck in 2008 with 16GB capacities YET again, further compacted by the same price point for a clearly inferior product from last years model.

While I'm not a cardiologist, I just don't think it's a massive technical challenge to just pop out a heart and put another one in - it's only a bit of plumbing ...

You're assuming its running the same OS as the previous nano's, something I highly doubt.

Or a Whaaaaambulance? :rolleyes: Yeah, old joke. However, iEvolution dealt with it correctly: after weighing the pros and cons of the new model, iE decided not to buy it. Apple can't satisfy everyone all the time.

The battery life graphic is an approximation; I've seen my battery indicator actually increase a notch based on usage (video or heavy screen usage vs. just audio) once or twice when out and about and not being actively charged. A percentage reading on a battery that small would probably be rather inaccurate, and those who are that obsessed with battery life would probably be better served by a model with a larger battery.
 
Further to what I wrote above, there is a progress bar after all. You have to swipe to a second screen to see it, but it is there. The only difference is that in the case of audiobooks it only shows elapsed time in the chapter, not the track. Since my iPods are used for audiobooks about 50% of the time, time will tell whether this turns out to be an improvement or a disadvantage.

I'm slowly getting used to the new interface, but can't pause the thing without looking at it yet. I must say I feel a bit like Captain Picard trying to hit his communicator button.

The other thing I have discovered is that if you want to sync photographs, you can't fill it up to the max with music. This was the case with my 3rd generation nano as well, but the required buffer here seems to be bigger. Unless you have about 450-500mb free, it won't copy any photos across.

I've found it is useful to have the radio: though I realise this feature was also on the previous model it is new to me, and thus an improvement from my point of view (as is the pedometer).
 
It's small. Here is a idea. Fill it with music. Attach it to your new cars iPod dock and forget about it. Think how much space you save in your glove box. :D

The one thing that I wanted was wifi sync for the iPods. I would love to keep an iPod in my car and have it sync when I pulled up at my house.
 
I used one for a bit in an Apple Store today, and I hate to say it but I continue to believe that Apple made a blunder with this one.

The screen is way too small to be of any real use, as soon as you place a finger on it virtually the entire screen is unviewable. Browsing through music is gimped because only a few selections appear on the screen at once, and the design between various sections is inconsistent and ridiculously complicated at times (the various taps and swipes to go between music controls, for example). Also I'm kind of curious - when the iPod freezes or needs to be reset, exactly how do you do it considering it only has the sleep/wake button? Unless Apple has somehow hooked up the volume controls to be clicked/held along with it, I don't see how it's possible.

For many of the reasons described above, I'm sticking with my 5th gen.

FYI: To reset the 6th gen nano, hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down buttons simultaneously for 6 seconds.
