iPod iPod Nano 7th Gen Sync errors--syncs erasing music

Occasionally, every 4th or 5th sync, iTunes will give me an error saying a song or podcast's file type is not compatible with my device. It then has an expandable list of errors that then lists every item in my library stating that it is incompatible.

So, I unplug my (now empty) iPod, plug it back in and it syncs fine.

I am on Windows 8.1. Could it be a compatibility issue with 8.1?

Anyone else experience this?
