iPod iPod Nano G3 not connecting to my mac until restart

I have an intermittent problem that occurs with with my iPod Nano G3 where when I connect it to my mac it wont show up in iTunes or in the Finder and the iPod does not go into that mode where you cant use it until you disconnect it. Its just like it is not connected at all... but it still charges the iPod. I tried a couple of other ports with no success... however when I restart the computer it works again.

I'm running the most recent Mac OS 10.4 and my iTunes and iPod is up to date.

Any ideas?
