A mate of mine, a PC user, bought himself an iPod nano and downloaded some songs to it via iTunes. Now whenever he plugs it into the PC all the songs are 'grayed out' and he can't change the songs on it. He has given it to me to try - on a Mac. When i plug it in, although I can see the songs they are 'grayed out' and a lock appears on the right hand side of the number of songs/space left info at the bottom of the screen. Simple question really - why is it locked, and how can I unlock it?

Many thanks for your help.

When you have iTunes set to automatically update your iPod you cannot edit the content on your iPod, hence the list is greyed out. If you select, Manually update your Ipod, then you can manually add and remove songs from your ipod and hence the list is not greyed out.

swiftaw is correct. Your iPod is probably set to autosync. Change this to manual through preferences in iTunes. If that doesn't fix the problem then there is something strange going on!

You can see the songs on you comp even though the iPod is registered to another iTunes Library? Whenever I've plugged in someone else's iPod it always tries to erase and put my Library on it.

Sorted. Didn't seem to want to turn auto update off for some reason, but got it now. Thanks for your input
