Now that the macbooks have been updated, when will the ipods get their update? Wasn't there talk of Apple doing some event at the end of the month in conjunction with Steve Jobs' return to the company? Anybody have any ideas? It seems like the ipods are overdue for an update, and waiting until September seems like a long time to go with no updates. Thoughts?

:D I wanna buy a ipod too,I have nano 4g and shuffle 2g , but you know ...nano is not big enough,my macbook have more than 3000 songs . so I need a classic.
but buy a new ipod is not good idea. setp. just waiting !

What about the iPod Touch? My girlfriend is going for the back-to-school promotion, and we were wondering if the Touch is going to be updated soon... Its been 9 months since the last update, and the iPhone was just updated to 32 GB, which would clear the way for a 64 Gb version of the touch!

Still believe a september launch? Because in that case she might as well order now...

September, definitely.

Buy the Classic Now, Later or Never...

Because I consider myself greedy and prefer to have my entire audio library with me at all times and I am one of those holding out for the iPhone (Full Version) to be released on Verizon, the iPod Classic is my best purchase at the present time.

I understand Apple releases updated iPod products in September. However, I wonder what updates they will have for the Classic. The Classic 1st generation included 2 sizes (80gb & 160gb). Current generation is just 120gb. From 1st to 2nd generation the Classic product reduced. Apple's sales are solid in the Nano and Touch product line yet somewhat softer in the Classic product.

What possible upgrades could Apple offer the Classic? Disk Space, Glass instead of Plastic screen cover or battery life? I would suspect that Apple is done with upgrading disk space. Spinning disks is old technology and SSDs are the hot thing in disk storage. However, with Apple you can never really predict what they will release.

Here's food for thought. Is there a possibility Apple decides to discontinue the Classic? Sure... Why not? They have already decreased the product line from 1st to 2nd generation. Plus sales aren't as solid as other product lines. Why spend time, money and energy in a product with soft sales in this world economy. Rather make strong products stronger and solidify sales/profits in hard economic times.

If anyone has any insight of possible upgrades to occur on the Classic, that would be great to know.

For right now I am in a holding pattern until September. Either I will buy the next generation or I will scramble to get a clearance black 120gb Classic.

Thanks for reading...

The HD based iPod is slowly dying, it's quite noticable how Apple seems to just ignore it and talk about the iPod touch, nano, or the shuffle. As said above, I bet it'll be gone in 3 years when SSD's become cheaper.

Except iPods don't use SSDs.

iPods use NAND flash, which is cheaper by almost an order of magnitude.:p

It either stays the same with a price drop, goes to 240 at the same price, or is discontinued.

It WILL be discontinued within three years.
Is there even a 240 GB HDD that fits in the iPod classic? It uses the same size HDD as the MacBook Air (from what I've heard).

I think Steve jobs will get on stage and say good bye to his first born and talk about the new 32gb nano and 64 gb touch with cameras and wireless charging and OLED screens for HD viewing right on the ipod and not through a seperate dock and cables.

Yep, a 1.8" HDD has existed since, oh... since before the current iPod classic came out.

Meaning they could have done it LAST year with a 120/240 combo.
They are using the thinner 1.8" ones since last year, so I doubt we'll see 240 GB this year.

They went from a 80 Gb and 160 Gb model combo, to 120 GB model only, since they weren't selling enough 160 Gb models. So I'm pretty sure we won't see a larger storage space in the iPod classic.
