iPod ipod says it's still "connected"

I connected my ipod to my Macbook. Itunes was already open. The ipod said it had connected but it didn't appear in Itunes. Nothing happened. I couldn't eject as it wasn't showing as being there. I unplugged it & it still says it's connected. The clock on the ipod screen is stuck at the time this happened.
I plugged it back in & checked Disk Utility - it doesn't show there either.
I've tried reset - nothing happens.

right now I'm hoping it'll be OK when the battery goes flat.

Anyone got any ideas?

It is Ipod Classic 80Gb, and is less than i year old

I'm having the exact same problem except i have a pc not mac.
Have you worked out how to solve it yet?
