iPod ipod says itunes preparing ipod for recovery then after a few seconds disconnects

when i plug in my ipod nano 8g it says itunes preparing ipod for recovery then after a few seconds then disconnects and connects and ddisconnects its a cycle but doesnt actually recover. its not charging or anything.
