iPod Ipod Shuffle 3rd Gen

I have a third generation iPod shuffle that requires special apple headphones to control them.
The Apple store in my city told me they no longer make those headphones.
So can I use Apple Earpods? Will the control panel on them work with my iPod?

I believe that neither the EarPods nor the buds that come with iPhones work. No idea why. Several companies make compatible earbuds, and others (Belkin, etc.) make an adapter that will let you plug in ANY earphones.
