iPod ipod to car stereo for old timers

i'm old. i don't know what's going on.
how do i connect my iPod to my truck stereo. it's a 2000 dodge ram with a factory stereo and the original owner installed a disc changer behind the seat. i tried plugging in the 1/8" stereo cable from that to the iPod but that doesn't work. the cd player only works on a certain radio station fwiw. i'd like to wire it directly for the best sound quality as opposed to tape heads and transmitters.

the factory unit doesn't seem to have an aux. connection in the back...what do i need to get it connected?

i also have a sony cdx-mp40 that my kids left here in storage and it does have aux...but then i'd need adapters etc.

if i have to buy a bunch of adapters and converters and chargers would i be better off buying a newer head unit with usb capabilities and can i find them cheap. i don't want to spend much...i just want to listen to lectures and audiobooks while i'm traveling and need it to be fairly clear since i'm hard of hearing and my cab is pretty loud.

You may be able to replace the disk changer with an adaptor that turns that input into an AUX input. Or you might be able to get an adaptor that will allow you to keep the changer too.

Whether this is a sensible option will depend on the availability and cost of an adapter for your stereo. I have a Pioneer stereo for which this was quite cheap and easy.

The best way to go is to replace your head unit with one that has a USB input. It will most likely allow you to control the iPod in a manner that will be most convenient for you and keep the iPod charged. My set-up allows me to control the Ipod from my steering wheel (Ford F-150) and keep the iPod in my glove box. Life is good.

Look into DICE electronics to plug into your head unit. It will interface with your dock connector for lossless audio feed into your radio. Dension is another brand. These will also charge your iPod/iPhone/touch.
