This question reveals my total ignorance on the subject but I need to ask it.

Is it possible to take the 16GB chip (or whatever it's called) from an ipod touch and put it inside the iphone?

Not saying it will be economical but just wandering if it's technically possible.

Yes....... if you are REALLY good at soldering and such. But for mist of us, no. The flash chips are pretty much part of the motherboards and other components are sharing the same real-estate. If, like the Newton, the memory storage had been separated then it would be possible. The only thing I could see anyone do would be to upgrade a 4GB iPhone to an 8GB.

AFAIK, the touch acheives 16 GB by using two chips, and there's only room in the iPhone for one chip.

correct. there is 8gb where the 8gb iPhone memory is and another 8gb where the "phone parts" would go. so unless you want to case mod your iPhone to make it bigger in size, no, you can't put the 16gb from the Touch into the iPhone.

How does this hurt the possibility of a 16gb phone in the future?

it doesn't, as long as a single 16gb flash chip is released.

so this takes me to the question when (if ever) the 16gb iphone is released hopfully if apple isnt an a$$h*** i can take the 8 logic bored in my current iphone and replace it with a replacement 16gb logic bored? and if it has 3g replace the current com bored with the 3g enabled...and someware somehow something to do with someone called drunkenbass or something is writing software to record video on it and then maybe later flash will be capable then i would have the perfect phone

16(or 32)gbs of space
3g
video recording capable
internet browsing with flash
fricken a man i would be set...i should have just boughten a tilt and an ipod separate :/

All you have to do is to buy a Toshiba 32GB flash chip and solder it in yourself... It takes years of experience to solder such a small component, if you're not a robot. Only an old dog will be able to do it :D

Most important advise people will normally give you is, "don't short the legs !!" :)

Here's a picture where the chip is located at.
