As far as I'm aware, the iPod has to be charged while my MBP is on, and out of sleep. This is irritating since I know that leaving the laptop plugged in, let alone switched on all the time is "bad for it".

So I'm looking to buy a wall charger for my iPod touch for the UK 3 pin sockets. Does anyone know any good ones? Are there any that use the USB cable already provided to charge (I've seen these somewhere...). Thanks.

Try visiting any Apple Store or Apple UK or HMV or Zavvi. They all sell the official Apple Wall Charger which retails at £19. You can probably also get it from Currys, Comet and similar places.

You can also buy cheaper unofficial ones.

No need to buy an apple one. Just buy an adapter with a USB socket in it, it'll be far cheaper than an Apple one and work just as well for charging the iPod.

Try Tesco their selling all their Ipod stuff off and I picked one up for £4.50, its the USB type your after aswell
