iPod Touch 2nd Generation charger

I think I need to purchase a charger for my new iPod Touch (2nd Gen). I have an old firewire charger that doesn't seem to work. The plug fits, but I get a message that the device is not supported.

I understand that Apple changed the charging abilities to only handle USB. Seems pretty ridiculous to me.

Anyways, my wife has a 3rd generation nano that I would like to be able to charge with the same charger.

What would the best charger be to purchase? Anyone using the Apple USB Power adapter?

DLO Powerpack for iPod

I use the dlo powerpack for iPod. It only costs $40 and can charge your wife's nano and your touch. It comes with a USB cable and one wall and one car charger attachments. I like it because I can keep my apple USB in my computer and use the dlo one with the attachments to charge. Plus it only cost costs $10 dollars more than the apple one.
 
whatever you do, my advice is don't buy the tiny Apple usb charger plug. at 30 bucks it's a total rip-off IMO. don't know what's available where you are, but I bought a great usb charger for 10 bucks while in Japan. Here in Thailand we have many options around 10 bucks as well. Many friends are happily using them and they all work fine. 30 bucks for a tiny piece of plastic is overboard Apple.
 
I have a few iPod USB cables and one of them doesn't seem to work with my wife's iPod Nano 4GB (That we got in fall 2007) and my current 2g iPod Touch 32gb (that we got in fall 2008). I think this is an old cable from my wife's old iPod - an HP Invent one - MP102? Which doesn't seem to work or do anything anymore.

Should I just toss this cable or is it something to hold onto? What about the iPod itself? seems it's worth up to $20 "as is" on ebay:

This might be true for chargers that connect as a dock connector, but there should be no problem for a simple usb plug. My 2nd gen Touch isn't having any problems with the few cheap versions I've tried.

I can back this up. I've been using a crappy old Blackberry charger (USB) and a cheap travel adaptor. Both have charged up the iPod Touch (2Gen) without problem.

Since I regularly use a laptop, the simplest method for me is simply using one of the laptop's USB ports (there's no need for iTunes or device drivers).
