iPod iPod touch 5th gen worth it for music only?

Hi guys,

My girlfriend and I are Android users, but we loved our old iPod classic. Lots of space, and worked great with our huge iTunes library. It passed away last week, and we thought that perhaps it is better to replace it with a newer device.

Now that the 6th gen iTouch is out, we can get a 5th gen for over $100 less (than the 6th). My question is, again, is it worth it? We only need it for music and perhaps an app or two. No email, browsing, gaming, or camera is needed.

for only music, an iPod video or classic are best. You should be able to find a nice used one for under 100 bucks.

In fact i've just done this myself, I brought a 64GB third gen just to use for music and entrainment apps e.g spotify, I thought that a new iPod touch was a little over kill just for music as the storage and price were more important to me.

Depends on how much you abuse it. I went through a couple classic iPods pretty quickly--I'd drop them and the drive inside would give up the ghost. I liked the touch because it had no moving parts and was far more rugged.

Don't waste your money on a 5th gen, is three year old technology worth the $100 savings? Spend the extra $100 and get an extra three years out of the device (former 5th gen and now 6th gen owner strictly for music - it just works smoother even for just music).

Should be fine. I use one for music, movie watching, snapshots, and even light Web surfing. It's a bit slow for internet stuff, but it still does a pretty good job for the rest. It was my only means of communication on a tour of Ireland, last year, and it did better than I expected it to.

That all being said, I would only get one if the price is really low. The transition from iOS 6 to 8 seems to have dramatically shortened the battery life, so I don't know if it's a problem with the design, or just with having a nearly three-year-old battery. Also, just looking at the published benchmarks, the new ones are so much more powerful, it's nearly absurd. For just music, though, I reckon ANY TouchPod with a good battery in it should be fine.

Are the storage capacities the same? Even if they are, I'd try to shoot for 32 GB minimum unless you're both very minimalistic users. If you can spare the $100, get an IpT6. Otherwise, if it's more so a "throwaway device" and/or you can get an IpT5 for less than $100, then go for that.

Myself... I use both. I have an 80 GB Ipod Classic and an IpT5 running on over 3 years.
If the former dies, I'm getting a new one. The sheer capacity, and having a physical scroll wheel makes driving with it much easier.
If the latter dies, I'm disappointed that the IpT6 didn't get a larger, 4.7"+ screen, so I'll either just do the rest of my iOS gaming on my Ipad Air, see if I can get an Iph6 at a good price, or get an IpT6 if it's less than $100.
