My current iPod Touch (8GB) model is very very near it's end of life and will soon need to be replaced. My son has an 'old' iPhone 6 he can give me. I'm looking at the possibility of using the iPhone as a replacement for the Touch but have a few questions:

  • I do not have an iPhone myself but do have an Apple/iCloud account for my iPad. I'm assuming I will be able to use the phone without a sim card and access my tunes/media from either its internal memory or iCloud via iTunes.
  • Most of my tunes/media are things like meditation discussions/practices. I'm not sure at this point how to get these into the internal memory or, if I can't, what part of iCloud in-order to be able to play them via iTunes.
  • Is this iPhone/iPod Touch replacement idea a goer?

note: I current have 3.8GB of audio on the Touch but this could be greatly reduced to almost nothing if there is an issue re memory space.

Yes, an iPhone without a sim card basically functions as an iPod Touch. You should be able to do a backup of your old iPod to iCloud and copy the contents to the newer iPhone

That's a tougher question. How are they stored and played now? In theory you should be able to back up your iPod to iCloud and then restore the iPhone from that iCloud backup and everything will be there, however if playback of this media is through some older app that is no longer available in the App store then this won't actually work.

Since it won't cost you anything, best thing to do is try and see how it goes - you'll probably be surprised how easy it is. Storage space won't be an issue since your iPod is only 8 GB, and any iPhone 6 will have at least 16 GB. Only issue I can see if potential app support in iOS 12, but it sounds like you are just using iTunes, so it should be fine.
